TERYL MULLOCK | Transformed by Water

An essential element for life, exerting an unavoidable pull on our consciousness, this exhibition by Teryl Mullock in the Main Gallery explores the transformative power of water. Water has shaped our world: we are spellbound at times by the power of water to dispatch an elevated emotional state through movement, transparency, reflection and transmutation. Following years of process based experimentation on themes of fluidity, lightness and transparency, Mullock has learned to use water as the defining element in his work; delivering pigment and colour, depositing traces, marks, and textures, and manifesting the physical properties of the various surfaces which it touches. Through abstraction, the resulting work recalls imagery found in the natural world. Impressions of landscape, ocean, organisms and minerals, all in the process of becoming, combine with sensations of being suspended, floating, and in motion.

Local artist Teryl Mullock’s abstract collage art emerges from experimental processes, relying on intuition to draw on the trove of our collective consciousness, revealing fragmentary resonances with the familiar. His activity as a contemporary visual artist builds upon decades of architectural practice, beginning with firms in Montreal and Vancouver before the opening of Teryl Mullock Architecture on the Sunshine Coast. Mullock has been a practicing visual artist since 2016, and has exhibited his work on the Lower Mainland and on the Sunshine Coast. He is also a singer, songwriter, and musician.
