NIINA CHEBRY | A Change of Climate

Grand ice blocks dip, crumble, and melt, floating in solitude with hints of isolation and impermanence. The dual nature of water, as both liquid and ice, unveils itself through rich tones of inky ebony and aqua hues. These tilting masses bear the might of nature and the fragility of our planet.

Niina Chebry’s exhibition A Change of Climate uses the iceberg as a main subject representing a range of sentiments, particularly towards climate change. Paintings of the iceberg in various forms of existence are imbued with their majestic beauty along with their peril. As we experience more climate disruptors such as droughts, floods, fires, and extreme weather patterns, feelings of anxiety, depression, and hopelessness related to eco-anxiety rise. Through her sweeping moody compositions, capturing of weather and time changes, and variously angled micro and macro visions of icebergs, Chebry aims to generate awareness and discussion and to inspire and stir the viewer.

Wrestling with notions of beauty, impermanence, and peril, Niina Chebry’s abstract work draws on nature. After studying fine arts at the University of Alberta Chebry lived in Europe, Japan and India before settling in Vancouver. As a founding member of Parker Art Salon, she is part of the vibrant arts community at Parker Street Studios. Her paintings are included in public and private collections in Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan, notably at the Ueno Royal Museum of Art and the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo. Niina’s work is represented by Vancouver Art Gallery Art Rental Gallery and Gallery 8. She has exhibited her work in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the lower mainland and in Japan.
