NEA ANTOINE | Between Myth & Memory (Mixed Media)
Blurring the boundaries between myth and memory, Nea Antoine explores Caribbean folklore as a living expression of Black identity, resilience, and creativity. Drawing from the oral traditions of Dominica and the wider Caribbean, mythical figures such as La Diablesse and the Soucouyant are reinterpreted through a contemporary visual language. Each work evokes a dreamlike familiarity, inviting the viewer to feel the rhythm and mysticism of Caribbean storytelling. Through her use of colour, texture, and symbolism, Antoine transforms folklore into a site of reclamation, emphasizing the endurance of ancestral wisdom within modern diasporic life and celebrating Black creativity, cultural continuity, and the enduring strength found in shared memory.
Nea Antoine is a Vancouver based artist who aims to create ethereal and whimsical works that link historical Caribbean culture and aesthetics to fantastical storytelling rooted in mythology. Inspired by stories from the East, world mythologies, and her own Caribbean culture, Antoine sang and performed from an early age. After experiencing Hurricane Maria in 2017, she was compelled to take a leap of faith into exploring visual expressions, and she began to explore both traditional and digital illustrative mediums. Antoine holds an Associate Degree of the Arts from Dominica State College and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University.
