MAUREEN SUGRUE | Pathways
Maureen Sugrue’s exhibition Pathways represents ideas that came from conversations about aging, paths taken or not taken, and the journey to “now” in our lives. These conversations led to seeing or imagining paths; not necessarily literal versions, but instead interpretative impressions of the mental pathways that intertwine throughout our lives. Each work begins with white cloth developed in stages through dyeing, stitching, painting, and printmaking techniques, with constant experimentation during the process; resulting in vibrant cloth banners that represent a diverse array of mediums and techniques. Sugrue’s creative process involves the full development of an idea to a resolution, a deeply satisfying process that is also inspired by both the nature and culture surrounding her.
Maureen Sugrue is a Sunshine Coast based artist primarily working in textiles. Sugrue grew up in New Zealand, where she began her artistic career with art classes. She then attended Emily Carr University, from which she graduated in printmaking; as well as Capilano College and Concordia University, where she studied surface design and art history. Sugrue has exhibited her work on the Sunshine Coast and on the Lower Mainland, was a founding member of the East Vancouver Culture Crawl, was a member of Circle Craft on Granville Island, and operated a working studio in Strathcona making both functional and decorative artworks. Textiles have always been a major part of her life, with the exploration of colour, pattern, and design being an integral part of her practice.
