MARIE PRICE | On the Face of It
Inspired by mythology, philosophy, courageous artists and small children, with an interest in politics and social consciousness, Marie Price’s work explores the human interactions that take place in all of these forums and the mindsets we employ in attempts to organize our human behaviour. In this exhibition Price presents four different bodies of work, linked by a central theme of investigating the perpetually fluctuating conditions of human existence, and the sometimes questionable means we employ to exercise control over it. In some works, the emphasis is on maintaining composure in times of great challenge, and the need for tenacity and discernment during upheaval. Other works such as ‘Joan of Arc’ address judgment and exclusion, existing in both contemporary and historical contexts. The Troubled Vision series examines women’s lives using weaving as a central metaphor, and the series Exchanging Mazes for Labyrinths encourages contemplation and a focus on the simplicity of moving forward rather than remaining stuck.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Marie Price moved to Toronto in 1985 and to Vancouver in 1990. She holds a Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking. Price has worked as a full time artist since the early 1990s, primarily in the field of printmaking. She has taught at the Shadbolt centre for the Arts in Burnaby for over a decade, and has also taught and mentored artists at Malaspina Printmakers on Granville Island, in addition to serving on the Board of Directors and as President. Price’s work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout the Lower Mainland, in the US, Finland, Japan, Peru, and Australia.
