DOROTHY DOHERTY | Surfaces (mixed media)
Discarded coloured and textured papers are embedded within layers of paint obscuring their surfaces. Making incisions into the surface, Dorothy Doherty lifts and peels sections of the paint, revealing the layers beneath and creating a result that is often entirely unplanned and random in every way. In this process, and in working with these non-traditional materials, there is a challenge to free the mind and to move in new directions. Straddling the line between realism and abstraction, Doherty’s work examines a number of issues, particularly relating to urban decay, the beauty of the world around us, the rapid extinction of life forms on this planet, and the effect that humans have on the environment around us.
Dorothy Doherty is a mixed media artist who specializes in working with clay and paint. She received her art education from the Vancouver School of Art (Emily Carr University) and from Capilano University. She holds a BA and MA in Art History from the University of Victoria and a PDP from Simon Fraser University. Doherty has taught Ceramics & Design at Cariboo College, a variety of visual arts workshops, and was an instructor with the North Vancouver school district. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions throughout the Lower Mainland. Doherty currently paints out of Portside Studios and works with Ceramics at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. She is a life-long resident of British Columbia and is currently based in Vancouver, BC.
