CORALIE SWANEY | Thinking Out Loud

Inspired by the people who have said to Coralie Swaney “I’d love to see inside your head”, Thinking Out Loud melds portraiture with still life painting and explores the notion of the observer being able to look inside the mind of the subject. Whether illuminating simple thoughts, memories, fleeting notions, or a full-blown obsession, all portraits represent a reprieve from a world fraught with angst and tribulation. Also included are a family of sculpted characters, members of a fictional book club, with the interactions between these characters exposed and explored.

Coralie Swaney’s style of painting is best described as narrative, imaginative realism. Swaney believes that one does not have to create serious art in order to take art seriously. On the contrary, Swaney creates things that make her smile; art is the antidote to wringing her hands in angst. Inspiration is derived from human nature, most especially its quirks and idiosyncrasies. Infused with humour, nostalgia, popular culture, and irony, the viewer is invited into the narrative and encouraged to add to the story of her works.
