ANDREA FRITZ | Lyackson Place Names
Hand produced silk screen prints in the traditional style of the Coast Salish People explore place names and different aspects of storytelling and culture. Place names, and the stories behind each place, are an important part of the Coast Salish culture and the management of natural resources. Stories are drawn from places visited while collecting resources, animals seen and experiences had while travelling, and important lessons to children about how to live their lives. Fritz’s work aims to represent all of these different aspects of Coast Salish culture, using both contemporary and traditional styles in her prints. Each print in Andrea Fritz’s exhibition focuses on a place within Lyackson territory on the Salish Sea or on an aspect of Coast Salish storytelling, and is accompanied by the story relating to the piece.
Andrea Fritz is a Coast Salish artist and author from the Lyackson First Nation. Striving to express her People’s history and all of our futures using her art, Fritz focuses on the animals and scenes of the West Coast of Canada and our relationships with them. Fritz teaches Coast Salish art to students in the Victoria school district and throughout the province, she has participated in a large variety of community based art pieces and murals, and she has written and illustrated several children’s books sharing traditional Coast Salish stories. She works in a wide variety of mediums, including acrylic paints, silkscreens, murals, digital vector art, and jewellery. Fritz has exhibited her work in several galleries and other public locations on Vancouver Island.
