Denise Brown | The Fabric of Freedom – Quilts and the Underground Railroad | (watercolours)
During the time of the Underground Railroad, certain Freedom quilt blocks were said to be employed to communicate directional and safe passage information to fugitive slaves who were seeking freedom in Canada. Celebrating Black History Month (February 1 – 28) Gibsons Public Art Gallery is pleased to present Sunshine Coast artist Denise Brown’s Fabric of Freedom collection (boardroom gallery), including 19 square watercolour paintings to honour the quiet revolution that was the Underground Railroad through the unique and mysterious form of storytelling the quilts represent.
The Black History Month Collective will host a celebration online (via Zoom) on Sunday February 21st, from 4pm – 6pm, including a virtual tour of the exhibition, plus poetic performances by Adelene da Soul Poet and Queenie. You’re invited to meet the collective, the artist, and performers and enter into an important conversation about the significance of African Canadians.
Pre-registration is required, tickets are free, and donations to the Black History Month Collective will be gratefully accepted. To register for the Zoom event and celebration, email info@gpag.ca.
