Join us for a natural woodblock print workshop with exhibiting artist David Martinello. Entry to this workshop is by donation and it is open to all, no preregistration required.
Inspired by the prints in his exhibition Conversing Gestures, the workshop will ask participants to make rubbings of a woodblock with raised grain, which will be the foundation for a gestural response. The exercise will be framed with an assessment of the cedar, to discuss its importance to Indigenous peoples and ask participants to consider the legacy of the wood by describing the path taken for the woodblock to be in their hands. David will paint a picture of how it was once a tree with a bird sitting in it, where it grew, why the tree was cut down, and how it was milled and treated for the grain to be raised for participants to use. We’ll engage with the nature of wood to create art and connections to the landscape.
